Combining the assets of three different circuits, going as far back as the foundation of Famous Players Canadian Corporation in 1920 and Cineplex Odeon Corp. in 1979, Cineplex Entertainment LP today operates or has interests in 129 theatres with 1,269 screens. Calling itself “proudly Canadian,” the Cineplex Galaxy Income Fund, which controls approximately 50.6% of the operating company, is traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange. “Our goal is to be the best motion picture theatre operator in the business,” Ellis Jacob, president and chief executive officer, told Film Journal International in an exclusive interview during ShoWest. “We’re proud of what we’ve done as a company. We started six years ago with our first theatre and now we are the largest circuit in the country.”
