FAO ALL PRESS – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SCALARAMA – A Celebration of Cinema Throughout September, Across the UK 31 August – 29 September 2013 www.scalarama.com @scalarama facebook.com/scalarama |
This September, cinemas, film societies, clubs, festivals and enthusiasts from across the country will come together for Scalarama, an inclusive season that showcases the diversity of film screenings in the UK, whether it be picture palaces, pop-ups in parks or in your own home!
Over 100 screenings have already been confirmed across UK with over 50 partners from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Brighton, Derby, Leeds, Hull, Glasgow, Belfast and Cardiff taking part, plus many more still to be confirmed. A totally not-for-profit, cooperative event, Scalarama seeks to unite all film exhibitors in an annual, inclusive season that celebrates communal film watching in all its forms and encourages everyone to show films to one another, meeting similar minded people and discovering local initiatives.
From 31 August – 29 September, exhibitors from across the country will be holding screenings as part of Scalarama’s Open programme. Operating much like the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, screenings are submitted to the season, with the choice of film totally up to the exhibitor in order to showcase the diversity of independent cinema screenings and the range of film clubs and societies in the UK.
Scalarama also has a Core programme of 8 titles that will be screened across the country, ranging from digitally restored masterpieces to rare prints, live rescores to children’s films. Working with a range of distributors, archives and festivals, the core programme displays the full gamut of cinema. Titles includes a new 2K DCP of Carl Theodor Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc (from Eureka/Masters of Cinema), Czech sci–fi gem Ikarie XB-1 (from Second Run DVD) and a double bill of horror from the BFI Flipside label, as well as The Children Film Foundation classic Sammy’s Super T-Shirt (courtesy of the BFI) which will play at 32 venues across the UK.
The season will officially launch with Film Jam at the Ritzy cinema in Brixton on Saturday 31stAugust, which will see 11 film clubs from across London each given 30 minutes of screen time to dazzle, delight or terrify the audience, whilst in the upstairs bar, 5 soundtrack obsessives will be playing tag team on the decks. As part of the closing celebrations, on 28th September, Scalarama has joined forces with filmmakers Ben Rivers and Shezad Dawood to mark the 25th anniversary of the BBC’s Moviedrome, an influential inspiration to a generation of film fans, with a secret double bill in a secret location!
Scalarama culminates in Home Cinema Day 2013 a nationwide, inclusive event that anyone can take part in. Taking place on the last day of the season, Sunday 29 September, Home Cinema Day is a 24 hour event where members of the public are encouraged to pick films to show in their own homes, inviting friends, family or neighbours round and turning their home into a cinema for the day.
Keen to inspire the next generation of film exhibitors, Scalarama has been running free workshops, titled I Want To Start a Film Club, in London, Nottingham and Brighton, with a repeat in London on Monday 9 September, as well as partnering with education charity FILM CLUB, encouraging schools to create their own French themed screenings during the season.
All events will be listed on the Scalarama website www.scalarama.com,whilst the London screenings feature on a replica of the original Scala A2 programmes, created by original designers 2D Design.
By encouraging people to think about what films to show and how to present them, Scalarama intends to start a cinema revolution, inspiring a whole new generation of film enthusiasts…. So spread the word – Fill the Land with Cinemas – Scalarama is Coming!
Scalarama is presented in association with Staropramen and kindly supported by Filmbank

MORE INFORMATION
History
The season follows the Scala Forever and Scala Beyond seasons in 2011 and 2012 respectively, which paid tribute to the legendary repertory cinema, the Scala in London’s King’s Cross, which closed 20 years ago in 1993. Originally aiming to unite the film scene across the capital, the first season had 33 venues involved. Scala Beyond expanded this remit across the UK and had 132 different organisations involved in putting on film events as part of the season. Scalarama is organised by Cinema Nation, a Community Interest Company with not-for-profit remit to celebrate, encourage and champion all forms of cinema. (Please visit cinemanation.co.uk for more details)
Core Programme
A pre-selected programme of films that will be booked by venues across the country during the month of September. Formed of eight titles, the core programme shows the scope and diversity of cinema, from silent masterpieces to modern classics, on a range of digital and analogue formats. The programme includes a new digital restoration of Carl Theodor Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc, a Czech sci-fi gem Ikarie XB-1, a double bill of rare British horrors Sleepwalker and The Insomniac and a selection of 16mm works by the Kuchar Brothers, alongside cult children’s classics, live rescores, shorts programmes and 35mm archive prints. (For full titles and details please see below).
Open Programme
Much like the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Scalarama operates an open submission programme, inviting film organisations from across the UK to hold events under the season banner, whether they are long established programmers or those new to the field. The Scalarama Open Programme provides opportunities for audiences to discover films in local venues, whilst displaying the wide diversity of film exhibition across the country. There is no charge for submission, nor does Scalarama take a cut of the box office.
Home Cinema Day
Set to take place on Sunday 29 September, this national event encourages the public to show films to friends, neighbours, family or colleagues within their own homes. With suggestions by key film partners and noted figures in the film industry, the public are free to select whatever titles they want to share with their nearest and dearest. Now in its second year, Home Cinema Day will see people from across the UK join together on one day to celebrate the act of communal film watching. Follow the event via #hcd2013.

28th Sep | Closing Night Enter the Moviedrome
Secret venue – check website for updates
As Scalarama draws to a close, it’s time for one last sojourn into the dark as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Moviedrome: the BBC’s showcase for cult films that introduced a generation of late-night telly addicts to a world of savage and serene cinema. Originally presented by Alex Cox and then by Mark Cousins, Moviedrome has been resuscitated by filmmakers Shezad Dawood and Ben Rivers, who tonight will unleash a mindbending programme of dystopian proportions. But this is not the end… The campaign to bring back Moviedrome to our screens begins here!

Second Run DVD presents IKARIE XB-1 (Digibeta, DVD)
Ikarie XB-1 (1963, JindřichPolák, Czechoslovakia, 86mins, black & white, in Czech with English subtitles)
JindrichPolák’s pioneering and much-imitated feature is one of the cornerstones of contemporary sci-fi cinema. Adapted from Stanislaw Lem’s 1955 novel The Magellanic Cloud, and predating Gene Rodenberry’s Star Trek and Kubrick’s 2001, Ikarie XB-1‘s influence can be seen on both – and on almost every other science-fiction vehicle that followed. “Remains one of the most original and exciting science fiction films ever made… the film is packed with sublime moments unlike those of any film preceding it. A game-changing film that profoundly influenced the genre and showed that science-fiction movies weren’t only about special effects; they were also high art. Of the hardest and most admirable kind” Alex Cox. Second Run DVD are proud to present a new restoration of this marvellous film, with new English subtitles.

Eureka Video presents THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC (2K DCP)
The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928, Carl Theodor Dreyer, France, 97mins, black & white, silent)
One of the most emotional film experiences of any era, The Passion of Joan of Arc is a miracle of the cinema, an enigmatic and profoundly moving work that merges the worlds of the viewer and of saintly Joan herself into one shared experience of hushed delirium.Dreyer’s film charts the final days of Joan of Arc as she undergoes the debasement that accompanies her trial for charges of heresy – through her imprisonment and execution at the stake. The portrayal of Joan by Renée Maria Falconetti is frequently heralded as the all-time finest performance in the history of film, and Dreyer’s unusual and virtuosic method, in seeming to render the very soul of his actress, vaulted the director decisively into the ranks of the art form’s supreme geniuses. The Passion of Joan of Arc is presented in an exclusive new restoration on 2K DCP. Venues are invited to curate their own score to the film. The film is also available on DVD and Blu-ray, presented in either 20fps and 24fps playback speeds, and featuring Dreyer’s own original Danish-language intertitles.

BFI Flipside presents SLEEPWALKER / THE INSOMNIAC (Blu-ray/DVD)
Sleepwalker (1984, Saxon Logan, UK, 49mins, colour), The Insomniac (1971, Rodney Giesler, UK, 45mins, colour)
When wealthy couple Richard and Angela visit Marion and Alex in their decaying family home, an evening of drunkenness and sexual rivalry turns bloody as the guests fall victim to an unhinged attacker. Featuring a rare performance from director Bill Douglas (Bill Douglas Trilogy, Comrades), and starring Joanna David and Heather Page (both of whom would go on to work with Douglas in Comrades), this outrageous mix of biting satire and stylish horror recalls the work of otherwise unlikely bedfellows, Lindsay Anderson and Dario Argento. The stellar cast also includes Nikolas Grace, and features cameos by Fulton MacKay, Michael Medwin and Raymond Huntley. Perfectly double-billed with The Insomniac (Rodney Giesler, 1971, 45mins), in which a man experiences a night-time world that is part nightmare, part sexual fantasy.
Sleepwalker is released in a Dual Format Edition (DVD & Blu-ray) by BFI Flipside on 23 September. The Insomniac and other rare British films are included as extra features.

Parker Posey Film Festival presents PARTY GIRL (35mm)
Party Girl (1995, Daisy von Scherler Mayer, US, 94mins, colour)
Daisy Mayer’s first feature is a film about love, life and librarianism in New York city in the 1990s. This indie comedy features a razor sharp script, fantastic performances from NYC upstarts Parker Posey and Liev Schreiber, outrageously camp costuming and a soundtrack pulled straight from the dance-floors of the day. Posey plays Mary, the party girl in question, who after coasting on money from her illegal parties gets busted and has to find a new career path. This overlooked and unreleased in the UK until now indie gem, was to influence a whole generation of New York writers and directors most famously Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture, Girls). Much like its protagonist and the 40’s screwball films that came before Party Girl is filled with energy, it’s wilful, defiant and big hearted.parkerposeyfest.co.uk

In Bette Gordon’s pioneering indie narrative about voyeurism from a female perspective, a young woman (Sandy McLeod) works as a ticket taker in a porn theater, and her curiosity leads her to shadow a male patron. This film features an unparalleled collaborative team of downtown artists from the early 1980s, including composer John Lurie, cinematographer Tom DiCillo, writer Kathy Acker, photographer Nan Goldin, and actor Spalding Gray. Variety was shot on location in New York City at the now bygone landmarks of the Variety Theatre, Fulton Fish Market, and Yankee Stadium, as well as an edgier incarnation of Times Square. – Tribeca Film Festival

Jack Stevenson and Little Joe present THE KUCHAR BROTHERS (16mm)
Hold Me While I’m Naked (1966, George Kuchar, US, 15mins), The Craven Sluck (1967, Mike Kuchar, US, 23mins), The Secret of Wendell Samson (1966, Mike Kuchar, US, 30mins), Mongreloid (1978, George Kuchar, US, 13 mins).
Twin brothers from The Bronx, Mike and George have created a do-it-yourself cinematic style that celebrates the common man but does so in style oozing with “kitchen sink” Hollywood excess. Starting in the mid-50’s with a string of shorts shot on the regular-8 format, they switched to 16mm around ’65 and began making their own films. George sadly passed away in 2011, so Little Joe, a magazine about queers and cinema, mostly, have teamed up with Copenhagen-based Jack Stevenson to honour both brothers, presenting a selection of their work from Jack’s own 16mm collection. Titles include: Hold Me While I’m Naked (by George), a playful satire of motion picture making that leads to existential contemplations on the meaning of life. The Secret of Wendell Samson (by Mike), a personal story of inner turmoil is told in the vocabulary of science fiction, expressionism, and pop-fantasy which is entertaining yet sincere and soberly conceived, The Craven Sluck (by Mike) about the sordid domestic routines of a typical Bronx married couple, Adel and her office worker husband, Brunswick and Mongreloid (by George), a tribute to Georges dog, Bocko, who appeared in so many of the brothers’ films and was undoubtedly the best known dog in underground cinema.littlejoemagazine.com

Animat presents BELLEVILLE RENDEZ-VOUS – Live Rescore(DVD)
Belleville Rendezvous (2003, Sylvain Chomet, France, 80mins, colour, in French, English, Portuguese with English subtitles).
Animat are a downtempo electronica duo based in Sheffield, UK. A mix of specially written music, tracks from their DJ catalogue and the film’s dialogue and score is played live with the screening. For Scalarama, Animat will be revisiting one of their earliest rescores to the award-winning animation from Sylvain Chomet, Belleville Rendez-vous (aka The Triplets of Belleville). Combining dialogue and sound from the film’s original soundtrack together with live instrumentation and sampling, Animat create a unique, unforgettable live cinema experience.
