A major announcement is expected today about funding for the redevelopment of the Tyneside Cinema

The work is expected to cost around three million pounds, but for that work to be carried out the existing cinema will have to close from this Thursday until 2008. The Tyneside is the last original British news theatre still in use. When it reopens there’ll be new screens, and original decor hidden for years will be back on show. The cinema will have a temporary home in the Old Town Hall in Gateshead while the work is carried out.
