It’s not the first time The Plaza has faced difficulties. It opened on September 2, 1939, but closed the same day due to the outbreak of WW2.
In 1996 it closed after a failed bid to sell the cinema to property developers, and reopened in July 1997 as a community cinema and registered charity.
Then in November 2009 it was left £80,000 in deficit and redundancies were made after the heating collapsed in one of the worst winters in recent times.
The manager of the Plaza Cinema in Waterloo has admitted its future is ‘very uncertain’, but said those in charge are fighting for its survival.
The much loved community cinema, which has running costs of £12,000 a week, closed its doors on March 18 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Now, cinema manager Martin Fol has admitted he doesn’t know if it can survive this difficult time – but said its trustees are determined not to let the iconic building close for good.
