Figures published last week by the European Audiovisual Observatory in association with MEDIA Salles reveal that 2008 saw an increase across Europe in the number of digital screens equipped with DLP Cinema or Sony 4K technology. The number of screens rose by 70% through the year, to stand at 1,529 as of 1 January 2009. The Observatory estimates that around 5% of all European screens had been converted to digital by the end of 2008. The number of cinemas equipped with at least one digital screen grew by 48%, to a total of 815 sites (Table 1).
