With movie theaters now making the switch from film projectors to digital projectors, the art of 35mm film projecting–the staple of the movie theater since its birth–is dead. While moviegoers might miss the nostalgic “clicking” sound of a film projector, most probably won’t notice the change. Unfortunately for the thousands of film projectionists out there, the death of their trade is a huge loss. In Portrait of a Projectionist, Cape Cod-based projectionist Ridwaan Fridie talks about his love of film, as well as the sadness he feels at losing the thing he loves most. “This is all I can do, projecting film,” he says. “I don’t know anything else. I don’t know what I’m going to do.” The video is an intriguing look at how technology changes more than just our electronics, it also changes our culture.
