The Japanese government has compiled a draft policy for rebuilding fire-hit Shuri Castle in Okinawa. The policy is based on design drawings made for a previous restoration in 1992.
The government had been discussing plans for restoring the landmark after setting up a meeting of relevant cabinet ministers led by Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga.
The draft policy says the castle should in principle be restored to the original state using the design drawings. New knowledge gained since the previous restoration work, such as the precise shape of pillars, will also be used in the reconstruction.
It also calls for taking fire prevention measures, such as installation of sprinklers and other fire extinguishing equipment, while maintaining the appearance of the structures.
The government is also considering using projection mapping technology to show computer graphic images of the castle at the site as part of efforts to promote tourism until the reconstruction is complete.
