China announced a while ago that it was planning to re-open several hundred cinemas in response to the victories it had recorded in the fight against COVID-19.
The country was eager to get things back to normal. The movie industry the world over celebrated the move. Crippled by a pandemic that has stalled productions and postponed releases, they wanted China to provide some sort of blueprint that could be used to reinvigorate the cinema-going experience.
That is not happening anymore. China ordered its cinemas to close once more after recording new infections. The reaction makes sense but cinema owners are definitely weary.
