A hit with both critics and the public alike, it grossed $74m at the box office, earned Kaufman, Gondry and their collaborator Pierre Bismuth an Oscar for best original screenplay, and in 2017 was named one of The New York Times’s best films of the 21st Century. Two decades on from Eternal Sunshine’s release, it’s a mark of the film’s emotional and intellectual brilliance that it’s still in the public consciousness.
