Curtain still rises

Rising prices at the ticket counter and popcorn stand, combined with a few lean years at the gate thanks to sequel-happy Hollywood studios, rampant bootlegging and bigger and cheaper home theatre systems gave consumers plenty of reasons to abandon the local cinema for the comfort of their basement screening room. That is, before Avatar and the 3D renaissance came along.
