One of the issues with digital cinema, especially at projector manufacturers such as Christie Digital Systems (Kitchener, Ontario) or Barco N.V. (Kortrijk, Belgium) (see related articles on Christie and Barco in the December LDR) is the cinema projector market is nearing saturation. I wrote recently about the US digital cinema market (see November 2012 LDR) but the same is true world wide. According to the data presented by Simon Guthrie of Christie at the recent SID Mid-Atlantic Chapter meeting, by 2015 there will be 135,403 cinema screens world wide and 134,751 of them will be digital. This leaves a total market of 652 projectors, plus replacements, to be shared among the four makers of digital cinema projectors, Christie, Barco, NEC and Sony. Not much of a market for an industry that installed 30,493 projectors in 2010.
