In a recent interview, Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi made a significant statement about the lack of representation of cinema from the south (or elsewhere) in any nationwide discussions on Indian cinema, saying he found this insulting, deeply hurtful, and problematic. Not very far removed from Chiranjeevi’s sense of hurt is the overarching sway that Bombay cinema or Bollywood enjoys in the cultural mindscape of the large – and growing – global Indian diaspora.
