Forever independent: New York City’s IFC Center draws in customers with atmosphere and attitude

There are a lot of things that New York City doesn’t exactly have a shortage of. Pizza joints. Bagels. Funky smells on the subway. And independent movie theatres, to the eternal delight of the Big Apple’s cinephile contingent. While moviegoers outside major markets often have to rely on Video-on-Demand for specialty films, that’s not the case in the city that never sleeps, where buzzed-about festival hits and foreign favorites have their own theatrical niche alongside big-budget Hollywood blockbusters. But, as the laws of economics dictate, when there’s an abundance of supply, you have to work hard to set yourself apart from the pack and keep yourself in demand. It’s something New York’s IFC Center has done remarkably well.
