Great achievements in cinema are usually measured by their technical accomplishments. Innovations in how films are shot and projected reign in new ways of seeing movies and moviemaking, and filmmakers are always looking for a camera with a sharper image, microphones with better sound, better special effects, etc. There was sound, then color, wider film, wider screens, surround sound and so on, leading all the way up to today’s 3D, jacked up frame rates and reclining seats in theaters. Each of these recent innovations are tricks designed to get people in the seats of multiplexes, which face extinction in the shadow of television, public cinema’s old nemesis.
