A Coventry man has illustrated an iconic building in the city, and it captures the golden days perfectly.
Rob Yeo moved to Coventry three years ago – and after driving past what he describes as an “odd looking” building, he decided to do some digging on its heritage.
Upon finding out what the building originally was, Mr Yeo captured what it would have looked years ago and the result is amazing.
The building in question is the former Standard Luxury Cinema, located on the corner of Fletchamstead Highway and Tile Hill Lane.
It will be recognisable to many, as first the Standard Luxury Cinema which was opened in 1930 and then as the re-modelled Godiva Cinema in 1967.
Its shape and art deco style struck Mr Yeo. He couldn’t help but wonder about the history, so he used his illustration skills to bring the imposing building back to life.
Opened in July 1938, the Standard Luxury Cinema would pull huge crowds to fill its 1,350 seat auditorium, and was a popular haunt for revellers looking to go for a night out ‘at the flicks.’
It became the Godiva cinema in 1967 after some internal refurbishments.
