Directed by Fritz Lang, Metropolis remains one of the best genre movies ever made. The 1927 classic transcended filmmaking of the time and also foreshadowed industry trends that are now commonplace nearly 100 years later. As a silent film, Metropolis may not resonate for everybody, but as the first feature-length science fiction film (Georges Méliès’ Le Voyage dans la Lune a.k.a. A Trip to the Moon was a short sci-fi film produced in 1902), it’s still a must-watch for anyone who’s vaguely interested in the evolution of science fiction cinema.
