The leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, Philip Jackson, says the three-storey building would be a good place for a cinema
Grimsby’s soon-to-close House of Fraser store would be a good spot for a new cinema for the town according to the council leader.
The department store will close on March 1 next year after being saved from closure nearly a year ago.
The blow came soon after we revealed that a £20m plan for a multi-screen Cineworld on the Riverhead was dead in the water.
At the time, North East Lincolnshire Council leader Philip Jackson said he thought a cinema was more likely inside Freshney Place.
And following the House of Fraser announcement, he said: “I think a cinema in Freshney Place, at House of Fraser, is a good idea.”
He added: “It is up to the owners. The council does not own it and neither does Freshney Place. But with it becoming vacant and with the other empty units, there would be the space for a cinema.
“That would make Freshney Place more of a leisure destination, as well as a retail attraction.”
