In just a few weeks time, Olivia Colman’s performance as Queen Elizabeth in the third season of The Crown will drop on Netflix, but today she visited the real-life Buckingham Palace to receive a rare honor from the royal family.
This afternoon, she was made a CBE, or a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, for her services to the drama industry in Britain.
According to the royal family’s website, the Order of the British Empire was “instituted in 1917 by George V to reward outstanding contribution to the war effort,” and it now “rewards people from all walks of life.”
While the Queen does sometimes host investitures for the Order of the British Empire, today, Colman received her honor from Princess Anne. The two women look quite engaged in photos from the ceremony, but Colman declined to speak to the press following the event, so we don’t know what they chatted about.
