As everyone’s been saying for months now, this awards season is different. From movie theater closures to Zoom acceptance speeches and every delayed release date in between, the 93rd Academy Awards arrive with an undeniable asterisk. But ironically enough, it’s also never been easier to watch the year’s nominated films. For perhaps the first time ever, each of the eight best-picture nominees is available to stream before the ceremony airs, from the comfort of your own couch.
That means viewers will head into Sunday night’s awards with ballots in hand, well versed in the crop of Oscar hopefuls…ideally. In reality, the streaming fate of several of 2020’s top films—from Mank on Netflix to Sound of Metal on Amazon Prime—makes it impossible to know just how many people have watched them.
