Plans have been lodged to redevelop Port Talbot’s art-deco Plaza Cinema into a community hub featuring offices, 250-seat hall, gym and retail units. The Plaza was built in 1939 and once featured 1,000 seats, with Richard Burton, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Michael Sheen among its former customers. Neath Port Talbot Council has submitted applications for planning permission and listed building consent to redevelop the now derelict building.
Consent is sought to demolish the rear part of the grade II-listed structure and construct a new extension. The front section of the Plaza, which includes its original façade, would be retained.
The proposed community hub would include a café, offices, a 250-seat hall, multi-purpose rooms, a gym, two retail units and car and cycle parking. Other planned facilities include a conference area, a dojo and dance studio plus a digital recording studio.
