Tony Williams hopes the end of 35mm projection does not also spell the end of cinema-going as a ‘quality experience’
Digital cinema would, it was claimed, result in better film presentation in cinemas but this is often not true. Scratched film prints may now be mostly a memory but the experience that surrounds the screen image can be very much inferior to the years of 35mm film projection. Digital projectors are more expensive to buy, use and maintain than film projectors. Very regrettably, too many cinemas seek to offset these higher costs by abandoning the role of projectionist. This reduces wage costs but to the detriment of the overall experience. This is causing concern among film suppliers.
