A Japanese tourist visiting Taipei, takes refuge from a rainstorm inside a once popular movie theater, now on the verge of shutting down. On the screen, the last film the theater will ever be showing is a martial-arts classic, King Hu’s 1966 Dragon Inn. While the rain keeps pouring outside, beside the few spectators other presences reveal in the almost empty space -a crippled theater clerk searching for the projectionist, two older men that look like the actors on the screen…Are these characters real or spirits that refuse to leave? The film won the FIPRESCI Prize at the 60th Venice Film Festival; and made it to several directors’ list of the “10 best movies of all time” (among them Monte Hellman and Thai Apichatpong Weerasethakul) for the “Sight & Sound” magazine 2012 Director’s Poll.
