For the first time, I’m living in a city without cinemas. Also without theatres, concert halls, stadiums, galleries, nightclubs and churches, at least for most practical purposes.
But it’s the cinemas I mourn most, and not just because until the other day I made my living as a film reviewer. Long before I embarked on that career, seeing movies on the big screen was a central part of my life, starting roughly at the age of 10, when burglars took our family television and my parents chose to spend the insurance money on a Macintosh Plus.
