The drought is over for cinema fans

They walk in the door and they inhale.

As cinemas reopen throughout the land, the devotees who step into the foyer of Invercargill’s Reading Cinemas on Friday seem to be breathing deeply.

The air is redolent with popcorn.

Melinda Meikle has opted for an ice cream herself, but that popcorn smell is still a bonus. Part of an experience she has missed, in its entirety during lockdown.

How badly?

“Desperately. We go to the movies a lot as a family.

“It’s the popcorn. The whole big screen. You can’t beat going to the movies.”

Netflix, sure, they have that. But it’s not the same, she says, settling into the seat.

The next family outing will be the live-action remake of Mulan, still a coming attraction. But for today she’s ducked in early to catch the ocean comedy caper All at Sea. And for the time being she has the auditorium to herself.
