LONG before it was filled with shops and restaurants overlooking a car park, Kingsway Road was home to The Gordon Theatre. The venue, which opened at the beginning of the 20th century, was named after the iconic General Gordon of Khartoum, who had passed away in 1885. The theatre building was later transformed into the Hippodrome cinema before eventually becoming the Gaumont.
