The invention of affordable digital film making along with the convenience of digital projection has made the use of 35mm film nearly obsolete. For dedicated cinephiles, however, film has found a niche market among specialty movie houses such as The Hollywood Theatre or Cinema 21. Film buffs debate the benefits of film versus digital film making, but a format that most agree is by far superior is 70mm film, specifically Ultra Panavision 70. For many years, 70mm film was used for IMAX films due to it’s ability to be blown up to an incredibly large screen, but it’s also admired for it’s crystal clear picture quality and wide aspect ratio. After digital projection seemingly destroyed the need for film projection, the fate of 70mm film looked grim. Who would want to use costly, bulky, antiquated equipment when a sleek, easy to use digital camera could do the same thing?
