Watershed cinema has celebrated a milestone birthday this week after four decades of service to Bristol. The arts centre – known for its national reputation for world cinema – turned 40 on June.
Watershed was both the first full-time multi-screen independent cinema outside London and the first to integrate exhibition with production across a range of media arts. It is still one of the leading cultural institutions in Britain to this day – Hollywood director Edgar Wright cited it as a vital cinema of his adolescence where he would get to see independent films.
