The Cinema Projectionist includes a treasure trove of photographs taken in projection boxes across the 20th century. You can delve into historic photographs of projectors, projection boxes and projectionists taken between the 1910s and the 1960s. The collection includes the boxes of many renowned cinemas across the UK and around the world.

You can also explore the world of projection and projectionists via our website in several other ways: We have a ‘Virtual Projection box’, a range of audio-interviews with projectionists, a series of contemporary photographic portraits by Richard Nicholson and themed tours of the archive.

The Cinema Projectionist is a digital archive and website on the history of cinema projection in Britain. It has been developed by the team behind the University of Warwick’s AHRC-funded Projection Project – a team researching the history of the profession, including the switch from 35mm film to digital projection. An account of the research project is also available from The Cinema Projectionist website.

You can browse the archive at https://cinemaprojectionist.co.uk/.
