Whiteville’s movie theater ending 85-year tradition of film projection

When the lights went down Sunday at the Cinema III, they signalled a change for the future of downtown Whiteville.

The iconic movie house was one of the last of its kind in North Carolina, having been built in 1928 and opened as the Columbus Theater. It survived the Great Depression, World War II, the loss of the tobacco market, and a scandalous period when it showed pornographic movies.
