Why Cinema Still Beats Home Cinema

A few weeks ago, I achieved something that I’ve been waiting many, many years to do – and that’s complete a home cinema. I don’t just mean a big TV and a soundbar, but a proper projector-based system with surround sound. For the hardware nerds out there, it’s an Epson projector shining onto a 113in fixed screen, with 11-channel surround sound, optimised for (7.1.4) Dolby Atmos. The Epson projector is bright enough that after calibration I’m achieving 17-foot lamberts – that is the amount of light coming off the screen, which is more than the base specification for digital cinema – and it truly delivers a cinematic experience in the home.

Amongst all the comments I received though, one stood out. “Wow – you’ll never have to go to the cinema again,” said a friend. I can see why he might think that but, of course, it’s not true – I’ve been to the movies several times since then and it’s been fantastic.
