In 2020, Korean director Bong Joon Ho won four Oscars for his critically and commercially acclaimed film “Parasite.” It was the 11th foreign-language film nominated for Best Picture, but the first to win the award. In his acceptance speech, Ho said, “Once you overcome the 1-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.” A powerful sentiment, but lately, it can feel like an empty one.
